Join me on a daytrip from Riga to explore Zemgale, a region with unique spiritual sites, fascinating history and colourful local characters!
Our first stop is Brukna Manor. Here, Catholic clergyman Andrejs Mediņš, has created a haven with an unusual church, a restored manor house, beautiful gardens and striking sculptures.
Next, we visit "Ausekļu Dzirnavas, " a museum farm with lovingly restored historic buildings and rich collections of antique vehicles, machinery and more.
Next door, Bārbele Sulphur Spring is said to have great healing powers. Take a sip and enjoy the gorgeous setting!
We then go to Skaistkalne Catholic Church, whose has a famous icon draws pilgrims from far and wide.
The next stop is "Jūras, " a remarkable wooden village of chapels, sculptures and fantastic creatures handmade by local craftsman Juris Audžionis.
Finally, animal lover Māra Dakare will serve us a hearty country lunch then introduce us to her friendly horses.
